“I have to exercise. No pain no gain.” So when was the last time you leapt joyfully towards exercise? Some people do, but most people don’t. When it feels like you have to do something even if you don’t like it, it’s not fun. At the end there is a list of movement activities. Pick ones that are fun for you.
We punish ourselves when we don’t exercise, “ I will eat little the next 3 days.” It’s a vicious, self-destructive cycle. And the reason you don’t exercise is because you don’t enjoy the type of exercise that you think you should do. So if you don’t like lifting weights at the gym, if you don’t like running, don’t do it.
So let’s say “Don’t exercise. Simply move your body in a way that feels good. Movement is about moving your body, not just for results, but because it feels good.
- Moving your body helps you breathe deeper, oxygenating your blood and your brain, strengthening your heart, strengthening your skeletal muscles.
- Movement also increases your confidence and your self-esteem. It helps you get out of your head and into your body. Which we all need more of.
- Moving your body is also the number one most natural way to boost serotonin levels in the brain, the chemical that makes you feel good. Since movement increases serotonin levels, it’s one of the most natural aids for depression and lift up your spirits.
