Movement Not Exercise

“I have to exercise. No pain no gain.” So when was the last time you leapt joyfully towards exercise? Some people do, but most people don’t. When it feels like you have to do something even if you don’t like it, it’s not fun.

We punish ourselves when we don’t exercise by saying things like, “I will eat less today” or “no dessert.” It’s a vicious, self-destructive cycle. The reason you probably don’t exercise is because you don’t enjoy the type of exercise you think you should do. So if you don’t like lifting weights at the gym or if you don’t like running, don’t do it.

So let’s say, “Don’t exercise. Simply move your body in a way that feels good.” Movement is about moving your body, not just for results, but because it feels good.

  1. Moving your body helps you breathe deeper, oxygenating your blood and your brain, strengthening your heart, strengthening your skeletal muscles.
  2. Movement also increases your confidence and your self-esteem. It helps you get out of your head and into your body., which we all need more of.
  3. Moving your body is also the number one most natural way to boost serotonin levels in the brain, the chemical that makes you feel good. Since movement increases serotonin levels, it’s one of the most natural aids for depression and lift up your spirits.

What movement did you love to do as a kid? What movement would be fun to do with others? What is something you’ve never tried that you’ve always wanted to try?
